Betty J. Verkaik, 56, of Reeder, ND passed away at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 with her husband Robert at her side.

Service of Remembrance will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Reeder Community Center.  Rev. Duane Coates will officiate and private family burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery near Reeder.  Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 29 at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger and one hour prior to the service at the Community Center in Reeder on Friday morning.

Betty was born June 11, 1961 in Modesto, CA to Harm and Alice Hilvers. She was raised in the Modesto/Ripon area and attended school there.

Betty married Robert Verkaik on Sept. 27, 1985, in Ripon, California at the Almond Valley Christian Reformed Church. A few year later, Betty and family moved to New Plymouth, Idaho where the family resided for about 20 years. Then In 2011 Betty and Robert moved to Reeder, North Dakota.

Betty had a very strong Christian faith and she loved the Lord. She was a Vacation Bible School teacher as well as a Sunday school teacher for many years, where she shared her love for Christ with all around her.

Family was very important to Betty and she always eager to get together and enjoy time with the ones she loved. Our family was blessed as she was a tremendous wife, mother and Oma.

Betty was a wonderful cook and excellent baker. She loved trying new recipes and perfecting her own. Family get to gathers and holiday meals were such a treat with a menu perfected for each feast. She also loved crafting and could be found creating anything with the sewing machine, crocheting beautiful blankets or making elaborate cards for those around her.

Betty is survived by her husband Robert of 32 years and her five children. Tiffany and Kevin Etherton; Jacqueline and Nathaniel; Ashley & Pete Van't Zelfde, Brooklyn and Peter Jr, Anneke & Michael Lindquist, Zeke; Jonathan and his significant other Adrianna Sokolofsky, Lucille Joy; and Joshua and girlfriend Brianna.

Betty is also survived by her mother, Alice Hilvers of Ripon, CA; her sisters Jo Dirksen of Sioux Center, IA; Pam Sleeman of Ripon, CA; Nanci& John Dragt of Lake Norden, SD;

Brenda & Arie De Jong of Visalia, CA, and her one brother Harm Hilvers of Salida, CA. Betty is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Betty was preceded in death by her father, Harm Hilvers; Robert's parent Arie and Lucy Verkaik, a brother-in-law Arlyn Dirksen and granddaughter Glorianna Alice Verkaik.

In lieu of flowers a Memorial has been established by her family to the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation.
