Betty J. Stevens passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 21, 2021 at her favorite place on earth, her cabin at Shadehill. Betty was born June 4, 1946 in Dickinson, ND to John and Emelia (Jung) Schwartz. She graduated in 1964 from New England High School, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. In 1965 she married Tom Freer. To this union one son, Tracy, was born.

She later moved to Hettinger where she worked at Adolf's Gasthaus. In Hettinger, she met her future husband, Barry Stevens. They later moved to Bismarck where she worked at the Gourmet House. Betty and Barry were married in 1975 and moved back to Hettinger, where she worked at various jobs. In 1978, their son Kipp was born. In 1982, they purchased the Mecca Bar, which they operated for the next eighteen years. She later worked as a rural route mail carrier, a job she held for fifteen years until her retirement.

Betty was an avid bowler. Over the years she belonged to several leagues and attended the state bowling tournament on several occasions. She also enjoyed fishing with family and friends. She was especially devoted to her many pets including her cat Tripper.

Her favorite saying was "never miss a sunrise or a sunset and start each day with a good laugh" often at Barry's expense.
