Berny C. Rose's Obituary
Bernadette "Berny" Hartman Rose, age 100, of Meadow, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016, surrounded by family. As we celebrate 100 plus years of Berny's life, she has accomplished everything on her bucket list.
Berny was born on June 29, 1915, the oldest of six children born to John and Gertrude (Boll) Hartman at the Hartman ranch near Chance, SD, so she learned about responsibility at an early age. She has been a lifelong resident of Perkins County.
She graduated from Lemmon High School with the class of 1933, attended Spearfish Normal School, attained a teaching certificate and taught rural schools for four years.
Berny and Alwyn were married in November 1938. They celebrated 52 years of marriage and raised three children. They owned and operated Meadow Grocery and Berny was Postmaster in Meadow for 30 years. She was active in community and church organizations, pursued her hobbies of oil and watercolor painting, and reading.
She was kind to everyone and there was always room for one more at her table, whether it was a dinner or a bowl of soup and a slice of bread always with time for conversation.
Berny was able to live independently in her Meadow home until she moved to Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon at the age of 97.
She is survived by Les Rose, Ashburn, VA, Vonnie Foster, Meadow, SD, Evie and Jim Reed, St. Louis, MO, sister Dorothy Carmichael, Meadow, SD, six grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, and many very special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alwyn Rose, parents John and Gertrude Hartman, son-in-law Randy Foster, three brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am MT on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Bison. Fr. Arnold Kari will officiate with burial in Meadow Galloway Cemetery.
A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday evening at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon with Deacon Bill Dustman.
Serving as casketbearers are Stacy Boomgaarden, Michelle Reed, Rusty Foster, Rick Reed, Ace Foster, and Michael Rose. All family and friends are considered honorary bearers.
Visitation will be at 1:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
