Funeral services for August Magstadt, age 94, of Elgin, ND will be at 10:30 a.m. MDT on Friday, September 26, 2008 at the New Leipzig Baptist Church in New Leipzig. Nephews of August, Rev. Mark Iblings and Rev. Ron Klein will officiate with burial to follow at the New Leipzig Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 25 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to the services at the church in New Leipzig.


August Magstadt was born July 1, 1914 near Hebron, ND to Jacob and Katherine (Wahl) Magstadt. He married Tillie Heinle on June 23, 1938. In 1939 they moved to Elgin where August was the bulk dealer for Standard Oil Company until 1971. In 1959, he started the bulk propane sales and delivery business of Grant County Gas Co.


Tillie passed away in 1990. On July 1, 1995 August married Martha (Reichert) Mattis. They continued to live in Elgin and in 2002 they moved into Dakota Hills. Martha passed away on February 25, 2008. August was a long time member of the Baptist Church in New Leipzig.


August passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Jacobsen Memorial Hospital in Elgin, ND.


August is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Debbie Magstadt, Elgin, ND; one grandson, Zachary Magstadt, Elgin, ND; one step-daughter, Glenda (Lloyd) Klein, Elgin, ND; one step daughter-in-law, Irene Mattis, Bismarck, ND; five step grandchildren, Julie (Kevin) Kautzman, Karyn (Robert) Finneseth, LaDean Mattis, Kelly Mattis, and Shaylene (Eric) Howard; one sister, Ann Hyatt of Snohomish, WA; two brothers-in-law Willard Iblings, Bismarck, ND, and Bob Ulmer, Missoula, MT; and one sister-in-law, Ethel Magstadt, Riverton, WY.


August was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Tillie and Martha; one daughter, Marjorie; three brothers, Adam, William, and Toby; and two sisters, Lydia and Margaret.
