August's love of farming started at an early age by working on the family farm and helping the surrounding neighbors. At the age of fourteen he began working for his cousin John D Kirschemann. In 1952 August was drafted into the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed in Hawaii and Japan and fought in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in March of 1954. He then returned home and continued to work for John D. In 1956 he obtained his pilot's license where he enjoyed recreational flying for many years.
On October 27, 1957 August married the love of his life, Lucille M. Radach, the daughter of Adolph and Minnie Radach, in Mott, ND. They were blessed with four children, Perry, Pam, Paula, and Penny during their 64 years together.
As newlyweds, August and Lucille worked on the Beisigl Ranch for two years. In 1959 they purchased the Adam Oberlander farm near Mott. Here they began what is now a third generation farm.
August's passion and innovation for farming allowed him to be selected as the 1981 Harvest Bowl Honoree of Hettinger County for being an outstanding farmer. August loved to improve his farming operation through his creativity, ambition, and strong work ethic well into his final years of life. Along with farming, his entrepreneurial spirit ran deep. August was part owner of both Mott Grain Company and Regent Grain. He was a charter member of West River State Bank in Hettinger, ND.
Throughout his lifetime he was willing to lend a helping hand and belonged to a variety of organizations including, NFO, Lions Club, Elks #1137, the American Legion, and was a VFW lifetime member.
Anyone who knew August knew that he would never pass up an opportunity to play cards or place a bet at the blackjack table. He loved spending time with his friends and family, playing cards, visiting, and reminiscing about the good ole days.
