Obituary

ARTA GAIL SAHR came into this world on February 6, 1935 in New England, Hettinger County, North Dakota. To anyone who had ever met her, however brief, it will never be the same.
She was the third daughter of four born to Arthur Sahr and Esther Evangeline Dougherty (Daugherty).
Arta Gail grew up in Mott. Anyone from Mott for several generations would know who Arta Gail was.
She always had that big smile. She was full of fun and generous to a fault, and was caring and passionate about the things she loved and cared about.

On July 25, 1957 she was united in marriage to Wayne Lee Hoherz. To this union were born four rambunctious boys. She fit in as the perfect farm wife. She worked hard at keeping a clean and orderly house. Her home was always decorated appropriately for every season. She loved helping on the farm however she could, from running machinery, to cooking lunch and delivering it in the field. When her sons were young, she had her work cut out for her, but she never shirked her duties. Every boy throughout his growing up was fed well, clothes washed and cleaned, and a birthday was never forgotten.

During those years she also accompanied her husband Wayne, a talented guitarist, wherever he and his band would play. She always talked with a gleam in her eye about those nights of music and dancing.
She dearly loved her sons, almost to a fault. She talked of the times when she knew they were playing rough, how she'd shut the windows so she didn't have to hear them because it worried her so badly they'd get hurt.

Being a grandmother were her best moments in life. She never batted an eye when asked to babysit and indeed was an integral part in helping to raise several of them. She would make each child a special lunch. If they did not like what was made, she always went out of her way to make something that they wanted. She would never let a child go away hungry or unhappy. This generosity and love extended to all other children that came into her life through marriage and friendship.

Arta loved to cook for anyone and everyone. She was always baking caramel rolls, cookies, cakes, etc. Her family and friends eagerly awaited the annual Christmas Cookie smorgasbord of treats she would mass produce and wrap up in individual little care packages and deliver. She made so many amazing desserts that it seemed she had a special one for each son and grandchild. People were always calling her to make them something. And it was her sincerest pleasure to do so.Somehow she always knew when to crack a joke. Some of those jokes showed her fiery side and made your jaw drop!

There was never a game, a concert, a graduation, a confirmation, a birthday, a holiday, a wedding, or any occasion that grandma ever missed. She was everyone's number one fan. Whether you were running away from the ball, slam dunking it, sitting in the stands, singing your heart out, playing your fiddle in the pep band, or just doing your best in general, she would cheer you on. If you didn't have a grandma, that was no problem. She was everyone's grandma. Even up until the last year of her life, she was helping a young couple out by babysitting, for the first several months, a young infant. She never slowed down.

She was a great keeper of secrets, thoughtful with little surprises and gifts and efforts of caring. She would strike up a conversation with anyone no matter where she was, stranger or not. She also was never afraid to voice her opinion on any matter. When times were tough for family and friends, her support was amazing and unwavering. She was the selfless sister and friend. Her California family, the Taylors, will never forget how much she loved and cared for them, taking trips there, sometimes to stay and care for their father and mother.

When she finally moved to town in Mott from the farm where she'd raised her four boys and several grandchildren, Arta Gail didn't slow down. It was a hard adjustment for her to be gone from the home she'd lived in for so many years. But she went right on doing what she did before. Over the years she worked proudly at the Mott Drug Store.

Truly, this woman had so many jobs in life it is hard to imagine: daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, baker, seamstress (mending for any and all who asked!), janitor, farmer, maid, nurse, confidant, dog sitter, cook, the list goes on! And she worked equally hard at every single one of them.
She lived large and made a big mark on the lives she touched, though she always doubted that. Hence her wish to have no funeral, as she always said no one would come anyway.

The family will comply with her wish for no funeral. We know she'd probably be mad if we went against those wishes! But she was wrong in that the mark she made upon all who came in contact with her was for naught. Arta Gail had the biggest heart any woman could have. Despite her off handed unbelieving that she was such a wonderful figure to so many, she leaves behind many who dearly grieve for her.

This world is not going to be the same without her. Many regrets and tears will be shed for many years to come regarding this big hearted woman. God blessed her with so many people to love. And she did it well enough that we all deeply mourn her passing from this life at the age of eighty-one years old on August 24, 2016.Up until the day of her death, Arta Gail was busy preparing for her granddaughter Amy's wedding just a few days away. The sugar cookies she was preparing for the wedding were waiting on the counter.

Arta Gail is survived by an extensive family: Her sons Wade (Wanda) Hoherz of Bentley, ND; Chad (Shelley) Hoherz of Bentley; Kevin (Mary) Hoherz of Beulah, ND; David (Tammy ) Hoherz of Bentley.
