May 29, 1930 — Jun 15, 2018
Hettinger
Funeral services for Arnold K. Scott, age 88, of Hettinger, ND, will be held at 2:00 p.m. MT on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Hettinger, ND, with Rev. Duane Coates officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 9:00 a.m. CT on Friday, June 22, 2018 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery south of Mandan, ND.
Arnold K. Scott grew up on a farm in eastern North Dakota, near Merricourt. He was born on May 29, 1930, the 2nd of 6 boys born to Walter and Rose (Pop) Scott. He attended elementary school in Merricourt and High School in Edgeley, ND. Following his schooling, he worked for Ultieg Engineering, staking lines for Rural Electric Cooperative throughout North Dakota from 1948 to 1950.
He was 20 years old and a member of the National Guard when called to Active Duty. He was sent to Korea in September of 1951 and rotated back to the states in October of 1952. He was a Staff Sergeant with the Signal Air Ground Liaison Co. 8075th Army Unit. This was the only unit of its type in the combat zone, and was assigned the mission of providing communications for the joint operations of the division, the corps, the field army, G2 and G3 air.
On February 1, 1953 he was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Lorine Rudolph, in Edgeley, ND. They were inseparable for the next 65 years. They raised four children, Sharon, Jerry, Elaine and Julie.
Arnie was employed with Dickey Rural Telephone from 1952 to 1964 in Ellendale, ND; and in 1964 the family moved to Reeder, ND, where he was employed with Consolidated Telephone from Dickinson, ND, until 1992. He retired age 62, moving to Hettinger in 1991.
Following his retirement, he served as the Adams County Veterans Service Officer for the next 20 years. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, gardening and yard work. He also loved to tinker, whether in the garage or in his wood shop; he was always creating and inventing new things. "Bell-ringer" and "Great Scott" were a few aliases that were affectionately given to him throughout the years.
Arnie was a history buff – he loved to read about wars and learn about our country. He had an amazing voice and looked forward to telling his kids about his experiences, and also loved to tell jokes and play pranks. He was a kind, patient, strong, generous and wise man, big in stature but gentle in spirit. He had a reassuring way about him that made it easy to talk to him.
Arnold passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018, at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Lorine Scott, Hettinger, ND; his four children, Sharon (Neil) Donner, Forsyth, MT, Jerry (Helen) Scott, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Elaine (Kevin) Bergenheier, Carson City, NV and Julie Jahner (Rick Foss), Hettinger, ND; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clint (LaVern) Scott, Jamestown, ND, Clifford Scott, Parker, CO, Lyle (Joyce) Scott, Dickinson, ND; sister-in-law, Delores Scott, Miles City, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews.
