Arlene Louise Miller was born August 16, 1929 to Louis and Clara Miller at Lemmon, S.D. She grew up on the ranch East of Summerville. The school was on the side of a hill and they lived close so they would walk to school and go home and eat lunch and then back to school. The Ham's were their close neighbors and they would walk over and play with them.
In 1939 a storm came up, they lived in a two story house, her and her sister Shirley, brothers Loren and Duane were told to get their butts into the house. They went up to their room and stood up against the North wall. The tornado went thru taking the South side of the upstairs off. They opened their bedroom door and could see outside. The house was shaking a lot! When Arlene was in grade school, she got scarlet fever and missed a whole year of school. She said they didn't know if they would lose her or not. Duane was a year younger and helped
her with school and they graduated together from Lemmon High School in
1947.
In 1948 she married Ernest Kari and they had five children, Dennis, Virginia, Kevin, Rene and Blane. She was a stay at home mom and after everyone was out of high school she helped out at the store, she cut and wrapped meat and stocked shelves. Blane had her helping stock
shelves after Chad Barnes bought the store last year. Chad's daughter, Mattie would tell mom how to do it. Mom would say, "That little girl was trying to tell me how to stock shelves."
