Anne Katharine (Ternes) Riehl, passed away on Thursday morning, July 1, 2021 at Avantara Mountain View Nursing Care, Rapid City, SD, just 15 days before her 97th birthday. Anne was born to Anton R. and Marcellina (Grosz) Ternes at their rural home south of Raleigh, ND on July 16, 1924. She was the fourth of 14 children and attended rural country school through eighth grade south of St. Gertrude, ND.

Coming from a large family, she assisted with milking before walking or riding horseback to school each day, caring for her younger siblings, and numerous indoor and outdoor chores.
Anne married Joe Riehl of Brisbane, ND on February 9, 1942 at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church near Raleigh, ND. Their oldest child, JoAnn, was born in 1943 when they worked as hired ranch and farm help in Grant and Sioux Counties, North Dakota. In March, 1945 they purchased their ranch in Corson County, SD, 9 1/2 miles south of Watauga, SD after which their daughter, Juliette, was born. Elliott, their son, was born in 1956, and Sharon, their youngest daughter, was born in 1958. They raised beef cattle and hogs, and farmed small grain crops. Joe and Anne sponsored Paul Soebbing of Watauga, originally from Germany, in the 1950s who became their hired hand for two years.
Anne was an expert at cooking, baking, gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, embroidery, making German recipes, raising chickens, and doctoring up the baby calves and pigs. She was accurate in weather predictions and did rainfall counts for many years and also assisted with the cattle, driving tractor, haying, and fencing. Anne exhibited a great work ethic in everything she did. Her hobbies included reading, fishing, playing whist, watching baseball especially the Yankees, listening to and dancing to accordion and old-time music, and completing Word Search puzzles and many Jigsaw puzzles.
Anne was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Watauga, SD, sang in the church choir for several years, and was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Altar Society as well as teaching Catechism and CCD to local third and fourth graders for many years. She loved St. Michael's Church, the Watauga community, and Corson County.
She is survived by her beloved son, Elliott Riehl, Watauga, SD and two daughters, JoAnn Gannon, Sioux Falls, SD and Julie Montgomery, Rapid City, SD. Her 15 grandchildren include Alysia Riehl, Tanya (Chris) Koch, Josh (Adrienne) Riehl, Elias Riehl, Carissa Riehl, Angie Gannon, Leo (Lynn) Gannon, Sonya (Brad) Johnson, Celeste (Mike) Sabers, Melissa (Dave) Cunningham, Monte (Jody) Gannon, Michele (Tony) Griffith, Rachel (Jeremy) Waddell, Tyler (Toni) Long, and Jessica (Derek) Oster.  She is also survived by two sisters, Alvina Lenerville, Rapid City, SD, Darlene (Jim) Soucy, Fargo, ND, one sister-in- law, Marie Ternes, Lemmon, SD and one brother-in-law, Carl Riehl, State Veteran's Home, Hot Springs, SD.
