Obituary

Funeral services for Anna M. Sack, age 95, of Reeder, ND will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012 at the Congregational Church in Reeder. Pastor Richard Wyman will officiate with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery south of Reeder.

Anna M. Hendricks was born on October 24, 1916 to John and Antjie (Hartman) Hendricks in Ellingson, SD. She was the youngest of nine children; seven brothers and one sister. She attended grade school at several schools (Pleasant Valley, Fairview and Swanson) in the area as they opened and closed according to teacher availability and children population, as it often varied. She graduated from Swanson School and often talked of the ceremony in Bison, SD and her first "store-bought" dress for the occasion.

Anna worked for several families, helping young mothers with their household chores and remained at home to help, and then do the household chores when her mother died. In 1939 she married Paul Sack, a young man of the Ellingson neighborhood. To this union six children were born; Yvonne, James, Sharon, Leo, Wanda and Joanne. They lived in Mobridge, SD for two years where Paul was employed at the Ford Garage.

They returned to Lodgepole, SD in 1941 where Paul, and his brother, Lyle, operated a coal mine north of that community. Paul also did electrical wiring in the area and drove truck for Joe Warner.

In 1952, the family moved to Reeder, ND when Paul became employed at the Knife River Coal Mine near Gasocyne, ND.

Besides raising the children, Anna also taught Sunday School and works as an assistant cook at the school. She often talked of those times, and getting to know so many of the young people that passed through the halls of Reeder Public School.

Anna was a member of the Congregational Church and the Ladies Aide group. Church was an important part of her life as were Sunday afternoons where she enjoyed being with her special friends, Esther Muth and Hilda Schwarzwalter as they visited and play cards. They often said, "…it's something to do with our hands while we visit."

She enjoyed having friends stop in for a cup of coffee and a visit. She liked to listen to most kinds of music, enjoyed sunny days and especially watching the birds and squirrels. In January of 2005, Anna entered Southwest Healthcare's Long Term Care facility in Bowman.

Anna passed away on Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2012 at the Southwest Healthcare Nursing Home in Bowman, ND.

Anna is survived by her children, Yvonne (Charles) Pagel, Columbus, NE, James (Lenore) Sack, Center, ND, Sharon (Stan) Bain, Elmo, MT, Leo Sack, Reeder, ND, Wanda Rezac Columbus, NE, and Joanne (Gene) Steward, Grove Spring, MO; nine grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on November 22, 1988; son-in-law, Russell Rezac; her parents; her siblings; and her sisters and brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday morning.
