ANDREW BERNARD BAATZ, "Andy" to his many friends, was born October 31, 1958 at Oberlin, OH to Bernard and Ida (Freed) Baatz. He attended school in Oberlin and then began working on a farm until the late 1980's. Andy was united in marriage to Carissa Sheppard on October 18, 1986 in New London, OH. In 1989, he began working for a trucking company out of Chicago hauling scrap iron, later becoming an owner/operator.

To get away from the big city life, they moved to Newell, SD in January of 2001 and quickly developed a love of the Black Hills. In 2004, they moved to Elgin, sold his trucks, and purchased a farm south of Elgin. He loved the farm and ranch style of life, especially working with cattle. He also did trucking locally and for Southwest Grain.

In 2009, he began working for Duppong's in Glen Ullin as a mechanic. At the time of his death, he was working on equipment near Ft. Rice, ND.

He passed away on July 27, 2011.

The highlight of his life was his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed people and was a friend to everyone, a stranger but just once.

Surviving family members include his wife, Carissa, Elgin, ND; 2 sons, Nicholas, Jamestown, ND; Dustin (special friend, Mindy) Bismarck, ND; 2 daughters, Brittany Baatz, Elgin, ND; Tabatha (Scott) Packard, Lorain, OH, 6 grandchildren, Ryan, Jessie, Greg, Faith, Noah, and Nick, 2 sisters, Viola Stump, Oberlin, OH; Susan (Alfred) Goble, Wakeman, OH; and numerous nieces nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Sunday 1:00 to 7:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin.
