Almore Emanuel Hertz was born on June 20, 1921 in New Leipzig, ND at home to Emanuel and Pauline (Reiser) Hertz. Almore lived his entire life in New Leipzig. He had 4 step sisters, 2 step brothers, one full brother and sister.
He attended 12 years of school at New Leipzig. Almore was active in a variety of sports throughout the years. After High School graduation, he worked in his father's hardware store for one year. He married his High School sweetheart, Olive Ivarie in July 1940.
They lived with Almore's parents in New Leipzig until the fall when Almore and Olive moved to Minneapolis, MN where Almore attended Mortician School. He graduated from this school in the spring of 1941. They moved back to New Leipzig and lived in back of the old Post Office for three months. Almore and Olive moved to Washington and Almore worked in the shipyards for a while. Almore was drafted into the Army during WWII and had to go back to ND to report into the Army. (He wanted to enlist in the Navy, but was denied because of his eyesight.) Olive had to stay with her parents at Brush Prairie, and their son, Jack was born in Vancouver, WA in 1943
Almore was transferred to Ol' Riley General Hospital in Springfield, MO and stayed there for one and a half years. He was then transferred to Fort Lewis, WA and their daughter, Diane was born in 1944 in Vancouver, WA. Olive was living close to her parents and she couldn't go with to Fort Lewis.
After discharge from the Army, Almore and family moved back to New Leipzig, ND. Almore returned to the hardware store to work, with his father Emanuel Hertz and brother, Herbert Hertz.
Four more sons were born to Almore and Olive, Keith in 1948, Kevin in 1951, Jan in 1955 and Darcy in 1958. Almore retired from the hardware store in 1984 at the age of 62, but continued to run Hertz's Funeral Home. A few years later, son Jack, also a licensed Mortician, moved to New Leipzig. He worked with Almore at the Funeral Home, until Almore retired at the age of 85.
Almore and Olive were married 46 years when God called "Ollie" home on March 27, 1986 after three years of struggling with emphysema. She was only 64.
Two years later, on April 9, 1988, Almore married Myla Rowe at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Leipzig. There were now 6 Hertz children and 4 Rowe children.
Almore and Myla resided at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 4 months. In August of 2013, Myla passed away. Almore moved to Vancouver, WA to live with his daughter, Diane and husband Jim Lince. He spent two winters in Arizona with Diane and Jim.
Almore missed North Dakota so much, so the decision was made to take him home in April of 2015. He resided at the Jacobson Memorial Care Center in Elgin for one month before God called him to his Heavenly home on May 7, 2015.
Almore cared deeply about his church, his home and community. His values and commitment to the Lord were respected by those who knew him. He was a lifelong, confirmed member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Commercial Club and American Legion. Over the years, Almore served on the church council, sang in the church choir, was on the city council, numerous civic committees and was an ambulance volunteer. He was a Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a fireman and helped in working at purchasing New Leipzig's first fire truck.
Almore loved life and all it had to offer in the great outdoors. He was an avid gardener all his years and dearly loved to hunt and fish. As he would tell Olive, "Food for the table". Almore walked daily and had lots of fishing and hunting stories to share with anyone who had a minute to listen. Almore was a caring and generous person with friends and family. His personality was calm and slow which led to a lifetime nickname of "Sleepy Hertz'.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his children, Jack, Diane, Keith, Kevin, Jan and Darcy and their families.
Almore was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and mother of his children, Olive "Ollie" in 1986 and his second wife, Myla in 2013.
Memorials in Almore's name can be made to a person's charity of their choice.
