Funeral services for Alice M. Ashmore, 84 of Lemmon, SD will be Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon, SD. Fr. Tony Grossenburg will officiate. Burial will follow at the Greenhill Cemetery.

Alice Gossmann Ashmore was born July 4, 1933 to Peter and Pauline Gossmann at Petrel, ND. They lived there in a section house of the railroad, until Mr. Gossmann was transferred to Lemmon, SD. Alice was educated in the Lemmon Public School through the 6th grade and finished 7th and 8th grade at St. Mary's in Lemmon. She attended high school in Lemmon and graduated with the class of 1951. She worked at the hospital during her high school years. After graduation, she worked at the Bank of Lemmon, Synder's Menswear, and First National Bank of Lemmon.

On January 11, 1957 she married Henry Rieger from Athboy, SD. They lived in Colorado for a short time before returning to Lemmon. They had two daughters Barbara Lynn and Diane Marie. The family was living on their farm in White Butte, SD when Henry unexpectedly passed away December 8, 1971. Alice and her daughters moved back to Lemmon and she continued working at the First National Bank.

On August 11, 1979 she married Kenneth Ashmore, adding 3 step-daughters to the family, Brenda, Christie and Jean. Kenneth passed away September 7, 2005.

Alice enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, doing crafts, embroidering, quilting and gardening. She always enjoyed having coffee with her many friends.

Alice passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2017 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.


Alice is survived by her daughter Diane (John) Wells; step-daughters, Brenda Schweitzer, Christie (Bob) Richardson and Jean (David) Foos; grandchildren, Meaghan Daniel, Zachary (Emily) Daniel, step-grandchildren, Garret (Robyn) Schweitzer, Grant (Lindsey) Schweitzer, Gaven Schweitzer, Riley Richardson, Rachel Richardson; step-great-grandchildren, Hadley, Adalyn and Jensen Schweitzer. She is also survived by her sisters, Avis Hunsted of Mitchell, SD, Margaret Gossmann of Plymouth, MN, brother Bernard (Shirley) Gossmann of Aberdeen, SD; sister-in-law, Lorna Rae (James) Gossmann of Plainfield, IN; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alice in death were her husbands, Henry Rieger in 1971 and Kenneth Ashmore in 2005; daughter, Barbara Rieger; brother, James Gossmann; brother-in-law, Carroll Hunsted; and her parents Peter and Pauline Gossmann.

Visitation will be on Friday afternoon at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and on Saturday one hour prior to services at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

A memorial has been established.
