Funeral services for Alfred "Skeeze" Uhrig, age 84, of Morristown, SD, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morristown, SD. Pastor Dale Nabben will officiate with burial to follow in the Hillside Cemetery at Morristown.
Alfred Duane Uhrig, better know as Skeeze, was born May 1st 1930 to Bertha and Myron Uhrig at the homestead near Paradise Flats north of Morristown. He was the 6th of 12 children. His family lost the farm in the dirty thirties and moved around the area until settling in Morristown around 1950. He worked around his parents home until he went to work for Texley Sheep Corporation in 1950. He lived on the ranch north of Morristown on the banks of the Cedar River where you could find him fishing in his spare time.
He loved to fish and could tell some very interesting fishing stories. He also loved to cook. In his younger days he could make baking powder biscuits like no one else. He was famous for his Sheep Herder Special; which was whatever you could throw into a frying pan and then put eggs over it. Use your imagination here.
Around 1970 he went to work for Ray and Joni Meyer on their ranch north of Morristown. He worked there until he retired, bought his house, and moved to Morristown in 1991. He was Morristown's mascot. He loved his Kawasaki Mule and would tell you be careful around the back because he will kick you. You could see him driving around in his mule picking up cans and such, shoveling sidewalks, picking up every ones garbage, and taking it to the dumpster. You would see him with tree branches in the back and sometimes with huge trees tied to it and dragging them to the dump site. Or maybe square bales taking them to feed horses. You could see him mowing grass around town and if he was all caught up he would start mowing the street ditches.
He loved to mow and if it should happen to break down, Oh Boy. He loved his family and loved to show everyone his picture of them taken in Sydney Nebraska. What a crew! He also loved to work on small engines. He could make them purr like a kitten. How many of us have held the spark plug wire while he would pull rope to see if it had spark? He could hold that wire and not even flinch. And when he got one running he was known to stop people going by to show them. He loved Christmas and loved buying gifts for everyone. Halloween was also a favorite. He loved to hand candy out and see all the children in the area. He loved Children and at the family gatherings the children always flocked to him. He had quite a sense of humor and had a laugh that was contagious.
Skeeze passed away on Thursday evening, March 26, 2015 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND. For a simple man he touched a lot of lives.
He is survived by his brothers, Alton (Aggie) Uhrig, Lead, SD, Jim (Marlene) Uhrig, Pierre, SD and Bill (Tina) Uhrig, Lincoln, NE; sister, Joan Sharp, Summerset, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ed, Hank, Mike and John Uhrig; and sisters, Elaine O'Donnell, Myra Jane "Baby" Licking, and Tootie Piekkola.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a gathering of family and friends at 7:00 p.m. all on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home.
