Agnes Steinbach, age 91, of Hettinger was embraced by our Lord and led through the gates of Heaven on April 3, 2021.
She was born on August 30, 1929 to Norwegian immigrant parents, Peder and Esther (Rasmussen) Tenold. She was the 5
th
of ten children, and was raised on a farm near Reva, S.D., and attended a small, country grade school. She helped around the farm and babysat for neighborhood children. She was an astute learner, an avid reader, talented writer, and was often complemented on her immaculate penmanship. She later went to Hettinger High School, where she graduated in 1948.
On January 13, 1949, Agnes was united in marriage to John Steinbach in Hettinger. To this union five children were born; Debra, David, Susan, Judy, and Betty Jo. They raised their family in the same home John grew up in, 12 miles Northwest of Hettinger. Agnes did the absolute best she could with what she had to work with, considering the home had no running water.
Agnes was a stay at home mother, wife, and devoted her life to the care and well-being of her children and husband. She went about her day to day tasks with a smile on her face, a gentle soul and a loving heart. She contributed in countless ways to make a better life for the family she adored. Agnes cared for the home, prepared three large farm-to-table meals every day, while also doing her outside chores. She was an entrepreneur of sorts, striving to bring in extra money to help meet her family needs. She did this by raising chickens to sell the eggs and dress some for sale, as well as turkeys and geese, from which she made down pillows from the geese, and dressed them both for special holiday feasts. One of her favorite joys was to grow a large garden every year, and she grew everything. She enjoyed sharing the excess bounty with the neighbors and extended family. Since her husband, John, raised pigs, cattle, and dairy cows, Agnes also helped feed the pigs and milk the cows, which she would then take to the town creamery to also sell. She did this when John was busy planting and harvesting crops of wheat, oats, alfalfa, and corn.
In 1980, Agnes and John decided to retire from farming, they and their youngest daughter, Betty Jo, moved to Hettinger. Agnes worked in the bakery department at Halverson's Super Valu and volunteered at the Clothes Closet. In her spare time, Agnes enjoyed doing embroidery work on white, cotton dish towels and pillowcases for wedding gifts. She also enjoyed reading and collecting poems, attending auction sales with John, looking for antique teapots and cookie jars to add to her collection, as well as looking for treasures at garage sales.
Her biggest joy in life was the day and subsequent years, when she became a Grandmother to 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. She loved being called Grandma and her visits with her grandchildren.
Agnes passed away on Saturday evening, April 3, 2021 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.
